Aftercare Scaling Aftercare
IMPORTANCE OF
SCALING AFTERCARE
Scaling is a dental procedure that removes plaque and tartar from your teeth. Plaque is a combination of food, bacteria, and saliva, which, if left uncleaned, hardens into tartar. Plaque and tartar harbor bacteria that can lead to gum problems like bleeding gums and loose teeth. After scaling, you may experience temporary sensitivity and slight tooth mobility. Therefore, proper scaling aftercare is crucial.
Here are a few tips for scaling aftercare:
- Avoid consuming hot or cold drinks to minimize sensitivity.
- Increase your calcium intake, such as drinking more milk, to promote gum recovery if you experience bleeding gums.
- At GTC, we apply an anti-sensitivity gel after scaling for a more comfortable experience. It also helps prevent tooth decay. Refrain from gargling, eating, or drinking for one hour after scaling at GTC.
Here are some common experiences after scaling:
- Tooth Sensitivity: After scaling, you may feel temporary tooth sensitivity due to the exposure of previously hidden tooth surfaces. This sensitivity will typically diminish over time.
- Gum Discomfort: Scaling involves deep cleaning of gum pockets, which can cause temporary soreness or tenderness. Rinsing with warm salt water can help soothe the gums and aid in healing.
- Bleeding Gums: It’s normal for the gums to bleed slightly after scaling due to the cleaning process. However, if bleeding persists or becomes excessive, consult your dental professional.
- Temporary Changes in Tooth Appearance: Scaling may expose more of the tooth surface, resulting in teeth appearing longer or gaps between teeth becoming more visible. This is usually a temporary change and can be managed with proper oral hygiene.
