IMPORTANCE OF

AFTER TREATMENT CARE
Retainer Care

Like a new shoes, we need time to adapt to our new retainer.

  1. Gargle after meal: After every meal, gargle and clean your mouth before wearing the retainer. Food tends to become trapped between your  gums and teeth. When left unclean for an extended period, this can lead to decay, resulting in potential discomfort such as a burning sensation on your gums and also let the retainer to be distorted.
  2. Daily Cleaning: Clean your daily with plain water. If you are using retainer cleanser, follow your product instructions. Only soak not more than 5 mins in general. Prolong soaking will change your retainer texture. If you do not have retainer cleanser.
  3. For 1st year, wear at least 22 hours  a day. After 1 year you can choose to wear the retainer for for night time only to retain the position of your teeth.
  4. Do not clean your retainer with toothpaste. Toothpaste can scratch your retainer, reducing your retainer lifespan, stain easier and harder to clean. Do use toothpaste for your natural teeth instead. Brush twice a day.
  5. Engage in practice: Our mouth contains many muscles that require training to adjust to our new retainer. By practicing, we can enhance our phonetics. Read the newspaper aloud to familiarize yourself with your retainer.
  6. Visit our dentist if you have the following problems:
    • Your retainer is loose
    • Your retainer is causing you discomfort
    • Regular check-up (every 6 months) is advisable to make sure you are doing a good job.
